My top 5 Autumn Trends for 2020...
I love talking about the new season trends and this year they come with a flurry of excitement now the kids have gone back to school and more people head off to the office or meet up with friends for coffee - life seems just that little bit more normal!
But what are all us over 40's wearing? The trend for 2020 swung towards lounge wear earlier this year, with websites selling out of the popular brands consistently! As more people are working from home buying online has become the new normal with many fashion brands and businesses pivoting to take their products and services online.
Many of the trends for A/W 2020 can be adapted from last years styles so before you head off to browse online, why not check out what you have in your wardrobe and see how you can transition from season to season. Sustainability is key and making our wardrobes work hard for us should be something we are all striving for - the days of throwaway fast fashion are declining!
Here are my top 5 favourtie trends for ladies who don't want to dress quite like their teenage daughters but still want to look super stylish and on trend too....
Checks - Check blazers, check shackets, check trousers, check coats - yep check is everywhere this season. You may have what we used to call a lumberjack shirt or similar in your wardrobe (or your partners!) I love a check shirt or a shacket and if you don't have one maybe this fab Isabel Marant Etoile coat would be a great addition to your wardrobe for the season ahead but you can also find great alternatives on the high street brands too - check out HM for a great range of shackets (which in case you are wondering are a cross between a jacket and a coat)
Leather/ Faux leather - Buttery soft leathers or faux leather are back again this season and what's not to love! Personally I prefer these classics in neutral colours but you will also find an array of colours available. A trench coat in a neutral faux is definitely a winning combination layered over jeans. Have you got one in yor wardrobe, if not and you are looking for something new in faux leather I love this trench coat from Zara for £59.99
Exaggerated Sleeves, Wide Collars, Shoulder Pads - The puff sleeve has been on the trend list for a while now but this coming season get ready to see more exaggerated sleeves and wide Peter Pan style collars making an entrance. Exggerated shoulders work well for many body shapes - just be careful if your body shape is an Inverted Triangle though (wider shoulders than hips and thighs) as adding extra volume to your shoulders should be kept to a minimum. This blouse from HM looks fab teamed with a wool vest (aka tank top). Do you have something similar already you can adapt ?
Belted Blazers - as an avid collector of blazers they are such a timeless piece and look great all year round styled so many different ways on their own. But if you want to join the fashion set this season it's all about adding the belt! Take a blazer, add a belt to cinch it in at the waist and create that fab hourglass figure. Looks great with jeans, trousers, skirts... throw over a cross body bag and away you go!
Chunky Boots - it's the season for boots and although there are many styles of boots on trend, this years number one choice is the chunky boot - think biker boot, think DM's, just think chunky! They look so good with so many outfits, so don't be shy, give them a go! Plus there are super subtle versions available if you are really not into the BIG chunky boot look completely, I know it's not for everyone!
Other trends to watch out for this season : fringing and tassles, on skirts and dresses - keep it subtle with tassles on a handbag or scarf. Denim is always on trend, look out for the flared, boot cut and higher waisted jean this season! I will feature more trends over the coming weeks.
