5 Retro trends to put back in your wardrobe this season!
I hear so many women over 40 say “Can I wear it the second time around” Or “If you can remember it the first time around you shouldn’t wear it again”!!
Ummm HELLO, yes YOU absolutely can - why not !
For instance I know the way I style a modern retro trend now is very different to how I wore it in the 80s of 90s (I miss out the 70s because tbh my mum dictated my dress I that decade) but for me looking at trends and deciding not to wear them because you remember them the first time around is just denying yourself the pleasure of indulging in the modern versions of the styles you loved to wear and most definitely CAN wear again!
So by choosing not too you could end up in a style rut and wearing the clothes and styles you’ve worn for the past 10 years or so that are also now probably more out of style than the trends you are steadfastly avoiding because you tell yourself you can’t go back and wear them again !! That’s not evolving lovely ladies that’s getting stuck in that age old style rut !
Allow yourself the freedom to indulge or dip a toe back into the retro trends but add a modern twist - add your own sense of style.
You can spend or save with some great options here or check out vintage/ charity shops or best of all the back of your own wardrobe :
1️⃣ Loafers - spend on Gucci save on Zara
This classic staple adored by many are now back as a firm favourite within the fashion set. Style with loose denim jeans, a breton and a blazer for a chic modern vibe.
2️⃣ Wide leg jeans spend on Victoria Beckham save on & Other stories
The skinny jeans are not going anywhere don't worry, but the trend is now nodding back towards the wide leg, flared, boot cut or boyfriend jean. Dip a toe in the trend and start with a straight leg if you feel uncomfortable jumping straight back to a wide leg. It takes time to get used to change especially when you've worn a particulate style for so long! Remember when skinny jeans felt weird after bootcut jeans for so long? It's the same in reverse now! But don't feel you need to revert to a wide leg if it's definitely not for you - wear what makes you happy and confident, that's the most important thing!
3️⃣ Blazer spend on Veronica Beard save on Zara
There is never anything more classic than a navy blue blazer and this year there is a style for everyone as the tailored blazer has made a comeback in the style stakes as well as the much loved oversized boyfriend style too. So whether you have one in your wardrobe or feel you need to invest in a new one, wear it with confidence and style it up for nights out with a silk blouse, jeans and heels or during the day with a slogan tee and trainers.
Style note: I also adore this beautifully tailored navy blue blazer from Holland Cooper as well - an investment at £400 but well worth it
4️⃣ Silk blouse - spend Holland Cooper, Save Lilysilk
There is nothing more sophisticated tor classic than a silk blouse. Choose one in a neutral and it will be a staple in your wardrobe for years to come. Wear with jeans and a blazer at the weekend or for casual business meeting with a pleather / leather pencil or pleated skirt during the week for work in the office.
5️⃣ Vintage Florals spend at Ridley London save HM
The revival of the vintage floral is probably one of the hardest to re acquaint ourselves with - the 90s florals and Laura Ashley prints don't feel that long ago to most of us! The trick this time around is to wear the florals with a modern take, try a sneaker/ trainer as your footwear and a leather or a denim biker style jacktr or even go bold with this years trend of a chunky sandal. This style looks equally lovely with a beautiful strappy sandal and an oversized blazer too so don't worry - again there is a way to style it for every look.
